Women's Soccer Downs D'Youville; Lions Secure No. 3 Seed for AMCC Playoffs

ERIE, Pa. – Emily Lewis (Washington, PA/Bishop Canevin) and Julia Schroeck (Fairview, PA/Fairview) each scored a pair of goals to lead Penn State Behrend past D'Youville 5-1 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) regular-season finale on Wednesday afternoon.

The Lions have secured the No. 3 seed in the upcoming AMCC Tournament this weekend and will host the No.6 seed, yet to be determined, at Mercyhurst College on Saturday.  Game time is to be announced.

After a slow start to the game, Behrend got in the groove late in the first half to take a 3-1 lead at intermission. Lewis tallied the first goal for the Lions with a shot from 12 yards out that made its way to the right corner of the net in the 29th minute.

Two minutes later, the Spartans' Danielle Gehen intercepted the ball from the defense in their offensive end to blast her 15th goal of the season in and tie the game at 1-all.

Behrend responded with two goals less than three minutes apart thanks to Valerie Wagner (Pittsburgh, PA/Montour) finding Sam Vasy (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) and Schroeck at the 39th and 41st minute. Wagner sent a through ball to the middle for a wide-open Vasy for a 2-1 lead, before assisting Schroeck from a run out of the defense for a two-goal cushion.

It quickly became 4-1 just one minute after the second-half whistle. Heather Klimuszka (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) controlled a two-on-one situation and passed the ball off the Lewis for the convincing hard shot and the goal.

The Lions scored their fourth unanswered goal at the 88:39 mark thanks to Schroeck for the final margin.

Robin Siegenthaler (Penns Valley, PA/Penns Valley) started in goal, making one save and Alayna Steele (Washington, PA/Trinity) did not give up a goal in the final 23 minutes of work.

The win marks the third straight for Behrend, who will be appearing in their 15th straight AMCC Tournament.
