Early Goals Lift Mt. Union Over Women's Soccer

ALLIANCE, Ohio – It took Mt. Union women's soccer less than two minutes after the opening whistle to take a 2-0 lead en route to a 2-1 decision over Penn State Behrend in non-conference action on Wednesday night.

The Raiders (4-1) earned their fourth win of the season behind an early goal and an assist from Kylee Kolesar. Senior Valerie Wagner (Pittsburgh, PA/Montour) found the back of the net for the Lions (0-5) in the second half, while freshman Taylor Troyan (Butler, PA/Butler) made a total of five saves on 14 shots.

Kolesar had a hand in each goal for Mount Union. She played a through ball to Wall, who then touched the ball around Troyan just 37 seconds into the game.  Less than a minute later, the Raiders had a 2-0 lead thanks to Jessica Finkler lofting the ball into Kylee for the header.

Wagner gave Behrend hope with an unassisted goal in the 66th minute. Maria Favorite came out of the goal to stop a ball and the rebound came back to Wagner who put it away to make it 2-1.

The Lions only took two more shots on goal in the remaining 24 minutes, with Sam Vasy's (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) shot being saved by Favorite.

The shot count was in favor of the Raiders, 14-6.

The loss marks the first time since 2008 the Lions opened the season 0-5.

Behrend returns to action on Saturday at home against Westminster. Game time is 1 p.m.
