D'Youville Edges Women's Soccer

BUFFALO, NY – Rebecca Alvira scored both goals for D'Youville, including the game winner to lead the Spartans past Penn State Behrend 2-1 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) women's soccer action on Tuesday night.

Alvira was able to pull the trigger, but it was Christina Ventresca who made 13 saves in goal for D'Youville (5-3, 1-1 AMCC) to stop the Lions (2-7, 1-1 AMCC) from getting the equalizer in the second half and hold on for the conference win.

Each team got on the board in the first half to keep the game even heading into the second stanza. Alvira did not waste time, scoring in the third minute with a shot to the upper right corner for a 1-0 lead.

Shelby Lloyd (Beaver, PA/Beaver Area) netted her third goal of the season just as time was expiring to knot the game at 1-all. The sophomore finished the ball after a direct kick that was saved, scoring off the deflection.

There was still one more goal to be had. In the 57th minute, Alvira gained the ball deep in the zone and beat Taylor Troyan (Butler, PA/Butler) for the unassisted game winner for the Spartans.

The Lions took a total of 21 shots, placing 14 on goal compared to D'Youville's nine shots with five on goal.

Behrend returns to action on Saturday at La Roche. Game time is 1 p.m.
