Houghton Nips Lions in Overtime

ERIE, Pa. – Alyssa Figueroa scored the game-winning goal 1:13 into the first overtime to lead Houghton past Penn State Behrend 2-1 in non-conference women's soccer action on Thursday.

The Highlanders (9-6) rallied back from a 1-0 deficit after the first half to score the equalizer in the second and netting the golden goal with less than two minutes gone into  overtime to snap the Lions (6-8) four-game winning streak.

Shelby Lloyd (Beaver, PA/Beaver) scored for Behrend on an assist from Jenna Lee (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island), while Taylor Troyan (Butler, PA/Butler) made seven saves in the loss.

It took just 17 minutes for the Lions to get on the board first. Valerie Wagner took Behrend's second corner kick of day, playing a ball short to Lee. Lee then crossed the ball and Lloyd headed the ball over starting goalie Katie Phillips.

The 1-0 lead stood up until the 58th minute when Atalie Fite gathered the ball cleared by the Lions defense and fired a shot into the net to make it a 1-all game.

With under two minutes in regulation, Julia Schroeck (Fairview, PA/Fairview) sent a floating shot from 25 yards out that substituted goalie Shawna Sprout made a diving save for to force overtime.

The Highlanders moved Figueroa from defense to midfield to create the offense they needed to win the game.  Jen Bowman found Figueroa at the top of the box, setting her up for a left-footed shot into the right-side netting for the game winner.

Behrend returns to action on Saturday at Mt. Aloysius. Game time is 1 p.m.
