Carnegie Mellon Defeats Women's Soccer

ERIE, Pa. – Carnegie Mellon women's soccer team scored three goals in the first half and added two more in the second to defeat Penn State Behrend 5-0 in the opening round of the Herb Lauffer Memorial Soccer Tournament on Friday night.

Grant Wilmer netted a pair of goals for the Tartans (1-0) and Katie Liston made two saves to get the first shutout of the season. Wilmer got Carnegie Mellon on the board in the 14th minute and then scored the first goal of the second half for insurance in the 61st minute.

Taylor Troyan (Butler, PA/Butler) made nine saves on 23 shots taken by the Tartans.

After Wilmer's first goal off a shot from 20 yards out that hit the top right netting, Louisa Pendergast made it 2-0 on a pass from Carson Quiros and a chip shot into an open net at 22:24. Megan Bartoshuk tallied the third goal right before halftime. She finished a cross from the endling by Kaily Bruch with a one-touch shot.

Wilmer pushed the lead to 4-0 on a poke shot from a deflection by Troyan. The final Tartans goal was off a corner kick taken by Missy Dominick and Tessa Allen heading the ball into the net for a 5-0 margin.

Behrend returns to action tomorrow for the second game of the HLM Tournament. The Lions will face Baldwin Wallace at 7:30 p.m.
