Lions Capture First Win of Season

FREDONIA, NY – The Penn State Behrend Lions put on a second-half show and scored two goals for a 3-2 comeback victory over Fredonia in the first game of the Blue Devil Classic Friday afternoon.

A very fast and energetic Lions (1-3) team were too much for the Blue Devils (1-3) to handle in the second half as Rachel Weyand (Butler, PA/Butler) scored the game-winning goal in the 58th minute on an assist by Megan Schwartz (Shaler, PA/Shaler) to help give Behrend its first win of the season.

Alex Bilka (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) got the scoring started early for the Lions when she scored on a shot from the top of the box off a corner from Schuster at the 11:37 mark of the first half. Fredonia answered with two goals from Alexis Moreland in the 17th minute and later in the 31st minute to put the Blue Devils ahead 2-1 going into the half.

Behrend tied the game just 1:12 into the second half off a goal by Olivia Belack (Upper St. Clair, PA/Upper St. Clair). She hit a bullet into the lower left corner of the net from just outside of the penalty area. Just 11 minutes later, Weyand found the back of the net for a one-goal lead with 30 minutes left to play.

Behrend's defense, backed by goalie Taylor Troyan (Butler, PA/Butler) who made three saves, held Fredonia scoreless and to just four shots for the remainder of the half to secure a 3-2 victory.

The Lions next game is against Oswego State tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Fredonia.
