Lions Still On Top; Behrend Breaks More Records

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's swimming and diving team continued to break records on the second day of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championships held at Grove City on Friday. The Lions remain in first place with a score of 250 in the conference and fifth overall.  

The record breaking started with the opening 200 medley relay. The team of MaryEllen Spooner, Julie Cook, Anne Lawrence and Hillary MacManus placed fifth with in a time of 1:53.51 to break the AMCC meet and program record (1:54.56).

In the preliminaries alone, two meet and team records were broken.  Katie Van Epps set the two records with a prelim time of 4:49.85 and then took off two seconds in the finals to reset the record with 4:47.13.

Spooner set an AMCC and program record in the 100 back prelims yesterday (1:00.71) and then did the same thing in the finals with a new record time of 1:00.58, resulting in third place overall. Meghan Stefanko took eighth in the 100 back in 1:03.77.

 Rachael Ragen was to top finisher on the night. She was the third swimmer to set a conference and team record in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.68.

In the 100 breaststroke, Cook claimed seventh overall with a time of 1:11.27.

The final 800 free relay marked the fifth conference and fifth team record that was broken on the night. Ragen, MacManus, Lawrence and Van Epps beat the AMCC record by 10 seconds, that was set back in 2007 (8:25.07).

Behrend returns to action tomorrow for the final day of the championships. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. and the finals start at 5:30 p.m.
