Lions Place Second at Panther Relays

BRADFORD, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend men's and women's swimming and diving team took second out of six teams at the season-opening and eighth annual Pitt-Bradford Panther relays on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions collected 166 points in 16 events, falling by 10 points for first place to Notre Dame. Penn State Altoona was in third with a 132.

The men's 400 medley relay team and the mixed 400 yard freestyle relay team came in first place out of 16 events on the day.

Dan Simon, Nick Kost, Nick Roth and Steve Torre swam a combined time of 3:55.59 to earn the Lions 14 points. Simon had the best time in the foursome of 56.49.

Simon also led off the mixed relay with a time of 49.70, before making way for Mia Pietropola and Anna Rose Watterson followed by Kost in the anchor for a time of 3:40.76.

In the opening event, the team of Lauren Rosato, Hannah Kelly, Meagan Daily, and Jesse Dunleavy posted a time of 3:27.81 for second place out of four teams in the 300 yard butterfly.  The men's 300 yard breaststroke relay also took second overall with a time of 3:22.09 thanks to Garrett Wagner, Kenton Matthaei, Eric Matteson and Scott Romanko.

In the ninth event of the day, Rosato, Roth, Pietropola and Simon were second out of seven in the 400 yard medley reversed relay (4:04.36).

The men's 300 yard backstroke team of Danny Szurley, Holcy Furlong, Lloyd Koester and Justin Seeley finished in third place (3:13.25), while the mixed 200 freestyle relay of Torre, Watterson, Dunleavy and Matthaei were also third (1:44.25).

Watterson also joined Georgie Hatch, Dunleavy and Lauren Rosato for a third-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay (9:16.23). The men's team did the same with Roth, Kost, Seeley and Mitcheltree but in a time of 7:56.48 for 10 points.

The women's 400 yard medley 4x100 IM relay featured Pietropola, Watterson, Alex Issacson and Dunleavy in third place (4:45.86), while Mary Therese Causgrove, Isaacson, Kelly and Daily were third in the 500 freestyle crescent relay (5:53.63).

In the men's 500 freestyle crescent relay, Matthaei, Torre, Kost and Roth swam together for a time of 4:38.99 for third.

Behrend returns to action on Saturday at Westminster. The meet begins at 1 p.m.
