Lowery Leads Women's Swimming and Diving at AMCC Championships

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's swimming and diving team won four events and broke five records to remain in first place after day two of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championships on Friday.

The Lions are in fifth place overall among the teams competing in the Presidents Athletic Conference (PAC) Championships and are leading second-place Cabrini by a score of 199-125. Franciscan is in third with 71 points.

Gwendolyn Lowery (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) won back-to-back events, starting with the 100 butterfly. She was crowned AMCC champion with a winning time of 1:00.68. She shined in the 200 freestyle for the gold. Lowery broke the AMCC meet and school record in the preliminaries with a time of 2:00.05 and then set it again in the finals for the win.

Mia Pietropola (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum) defended her title in the 100 breaststroke with a first-place time of 1:06.40. She set the AMCC meet, AMCC open and school record in the preliminaries (1:06.84), only to break it again in the finals.

Lowery and Pietropola got a relay win along with Emma Daghir (St. Marys, PA/Elk County Catholic), and Maryn Horn (Hudson, TX/Jersey Village). The foursome swam the 200 medley relay in 1:51.71 for first place and fifth overall.

Anna Rose Watterson (Baldwin, PA/Seton-La Salle) led Behrend in the 400 IM. She took second in the AMCC and placed 14th overall with a time of 5:10.92. In the next event, Horn earned the silver medal in the 100 backstroke. She hit a time of 1:04.50 for second and 15th overall. Allie Schneider (Erie, PA/McDowell) was third in the conference and 16th overall with a close time of 1:04.97.

After Daghir swam the 200 medley relay, she took third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.17. That time was also good for eighth overall.

The final 800 free relay consisting of Watterson, Schneider, Kristin Owens (Erie, PA/McDowell) and Lauren Rosato (Pittsburgh, PA/Chartiers Valley) touched in a time of 8:38.21 for second place in the AMCC and eight overall.

Diver Rachel Cotton (Media, PA/Penncrest) competed in the preliminaries on the one-meter and sits fourth with a score of 376.35 heading into the finals tomorrow.

The Lions take the lead into the final day of the AMCC Championships tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m.
