Women's Swimming and Diving Lead AMCC Championships

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's swimming and diving team got off to good start to the 2016 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championships held at Grove City College in conjunction with the James E. Longnecker Invitational and the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC).

The Lions crowned a conference champion in every non-diving event on the night to sit in first place after day one of competition. Behrend has a team score of 82 and second-place Cabrini tallied 54 points through six events. Pitt-Bradford is in third (44), Franciscan is fourth (41) and Penn State Altoona is in fifth (36).

Maryn Horn (Houston, TX/Jersey Village) and Gwendolyn Lowery (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) were AMCC champion in a pair of events. The two teamed up with Jessica Wyckoff (Elma, NY/Iroquois) and Allie Schneider (Erie, PA/McDowell) to win the 200 free relay in a time of 1:41.46. The foursome also took sixth overall in the combined meet.

Horn claimed the AMCC title in the 50 freestyle and was sixth overall with a time of 25.12. Wyckoff followed in fourth and 14th overall, touching in 25.89.

Lowery led the way for the Lions in the 200 IM. After finishing runner-up a year ago, the sophomore got the gold medal with a time of 2:13.87.

In the preliminaries of the 500 free, Anna Rose Watterson (Baldwin, PA/Seton-La Salle) set a personal-best time of 5:34.69 and then clocked in at 5:34.84 in the finals to earn her first championship in this event.

The Lions won the final event of the day, the 400 medley relay. The team of four (no names provided with results) tallied a time of 4:12.85 and also took sixth overall.

Behrend returns to action tomorrow for the second day of the championships. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. with finals at 6 p.m.
