Women's Swimming and Diving Begins Season at Grove City F.C.

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's swimming and diving team tallied 154 points for fourth place at the season-opening meet at the Grove City Fall Classic held on Saturday afternoon.

Clarion won the Classic with 1,223 points, followed by Allegheny in second (879) and Grove City in third (564).

The 400 free relay team consisting of Gwendolyn Lowery (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte), Jessica Wyckoff (Elma, NY/Iroquois), Abigail Witmer (Herndon, VA/Herndon), and Paola Maldonado (San Juan, Puerto Rico) had the best finish for the Lions of the day. The foursome record a fifth-place finish with a time of 4:00.0.

Lowery, Witmer and Maldonado individually recorded top 10 finishes on the day. Lowery led Behrend in the 400 IM, earning seventh with a time of 5:13.12 and then ninth in the 500 freestyle (5:54.31). Witmer took eighth in the 100 backstroke (1:06.68) and the 200 backstroke (2:25.46).

Maldonado was the top finisher for the Lions in the 50 freestyle, coming in eighth with a time of 26.17.

Behrend returns to action on Saturday at Alfred. Meet time is 1 p.m.
