Women's Tennis Opens Season With Win Over Medaille

BUFFALO, NY  – With four new faces in the lineup, the Penn State Behrend Lions women's tennis team opened up the season with an 8-1 win over Medaille in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Friday night.

The Lions swept all six singles games and won two out of three doubles for the victory. Newcomers Monica Gokhberg (Brookyln, NY/Leon M. Goldstein) and Colleen Miller (Louisville, OH/Louisville) were undefeated in the No. 1 and 2 spots for singles, respectively, while teaming up to win at No. 1 doubles, 8-1. Gokhberg defeated Courtney Kopper 6-1 and 6-0, and Miller posted a 6-2, 7-5 decision in singles.

Casey Smith (Grove City, PA/Grove City) and Rachel Harris (Russell, PA/Eisenhower) were also double winners on the day. Harris picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles and Smith earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the six spot. Together they posted an 8-1 decision at No. 3 doubles.

Malinda Miller (Champion, PA/Connellsville) and Catharine Haglund (Chevy Chase, MD/Academy of the Holy Cross) tallied the other two singles wins for Behrend. Miller grabbed a three-set victory (5-7, 6-4, 10-8) at No. 3 and Haglund won 6-2 and 5-2 due to an injury of her opponent.

The Lions returns to action on Wednesday against Fredonia.  The home opener begins at 1 p.m.
