Women's Tennis Wins Twice

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's tennis team picked up a pair of wins today, defeating Mt. Aloysius 5-4 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action and Frostburg State 7-2 on Saturday at Westwood Racquet Club.

Against the Mounties, Monica Gokhberg (Brooklyn, NY/Leon M. Goldstein) and Colleen Miller (Louisville, OH/Louisville) started the scoring with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Malinda Miller (Champion, PA/Connellsville) and Patra Sangpoompong (Bangkok, Thailand/Erie First Christian Academy) followed with an 8-5 victory for a 2-1 lead after the doubles competition.

The two teams split the singles play with each taking three games. Gokhberg was a 6-0, 6-1 winner in the No. 1 singles spot, while M. Miller won a close first set 7-5 before taking the second set 6-2 at No. 3.

Casey Smith (Grove City, PA/Grove City) won the decisive match at No. 6, defeating Yeo Koo 7-5 and 6-4.

Against Frostburg, the Lions won four games by default including three singles and one doubles. M. Miller and Sangpoompong earned their second doubles win with an 8-2 victory. Miller completed her undefeated day with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 decision over Nicole Abshur.

Gohkberg was the final winner of the night, pulling out a 7-6 and 6-4 victory in the lead spot.

The Lions return to action on Tuesday at Westminster. Match time is 4 p.m.
