Women's Tennis Earns Third AMCC Win
The Penn State Behrend women’s tennis team had four players who won both their singles and doubles match to help the Lions defeat Penn State Altoona 7-2 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Saturday.
ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's tennis team had four players who won both their singles and doubles match to help the Lions defeat Penn State Altoona 7-2 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Saturday.
Behrend opened the match by winning all three doubles matches. Monica Gokhberg (Brookyln, NY/Leon M. Goldstein) and Colleen Miller (Louisville, OH/Louisville) tallied their fifth doubles win of the season with an 8-5 victory over Alexa Lafferty and Cassie Yatcilla.
Patra Sangpoompong (Bangkok, Thailand/Erie First Christian Academy) and Malinda Miller (Champion, PA/Connellsville) secured the No. 2 doubles win with an 8-1 decision, while Catharine Haglund (Chevy Chase, MD/Academy of the Holy Cross) and Morgan Kramer (Canonsburg, PA/Canon McMillan) blanked their opponents 8-0 in the No. 3 spot.
In singles play, Gokhberg only gave up one set point at No. 1 singles for the win followed by Sangpoompong at No. 2 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. The third person to record two wins was M. Miller. She took Katelyn Piper in three sets (6-1, 4-6, 6-1) at No. 4 singles.
Haglund made it an undefeated day with a close 7-5, 7-5 win over Taylor Pompili.
The Lions returns to action on Wednesday at Pitt-Bradford. The match begins at 5 p.m.
