Women's Tennis Blanks Medaille in AMCC Action

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's tennis team opens up the 2013 season with a 9-0 win over Medaille in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Friday afternoon.

With three out of six new faces in the lineup, the Lions (1-0, 1-0 AMCC) swept the doubles by only giving up five set points and then won all six singles competition for the victory.

Alexander Laffey (Sewickley, PA/North Allegheny) won twice in her first collegiate start, posting a 7-5, 6-4 win over Liz Barrett at No. 1 singles. She also teamed with newcomer Chelsea Czerwinski (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) for an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles. Czerwinski won her singles match (No. 2) with a 6-2, 6-2 decision.

Malinda Miller (Champion, PA/Connellsville) and Morgan Kramer (Canonsburg, PA/Canon McMillan) had a double-win day. Together they posted an 8-2 victory in doubles. Miller had a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles and Kramer had the same score at the No. 6 spot.

At No. 4 singles, Colleen Miller (Louisville, OH/Louisville) defeated Courtney Kopper (6-0, 6-2) and then paired up with Storm Schaffer (Pittsburgh, PA/Greensburg Central Catholic) for the shut-out victory (8-0).

Schaffer completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles.

Behrend returns to action tomorrow against Franciscan.  The match begins at 1 p.m.
