Women's Tennis Competes at Goucher Invitational

TOWSON, Md. – The Penn State Behrend women's tennis team competed at the Goucher Invitational this weekend in Towson, Maryland.

Newcomer Chelsea Czerwinski (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) took third place overall at the No. 2 draw. She opened the weekend with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Sam Koropchak from Richard Stockton. Czerwinski dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Cassy Foy of Misericordia in the semifinals, but won her last match 6-3, 7-5 over Kirsten Cianci of Goucher.

Playing in the No. 1 draw, Alexandra Laffey (Sewickley, PA/North Allegheny) defeated Amber Beckman of Frostburg State, 6-0, 6-0, before falling in the semifinals to Rachel Fein of Gwynedd Mercy (6-1, 6-1).  The freshman then fell in the third-place match to Krystle Bendigo of Richard Stockton (7-5, 6-2).

After dropping her first two matches at the No. 3 draw, Malinda Miller (Champion, PA/Connellsville) posted a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Kennedy Logsdon of Frostburg State to finish in seventh place.

 Storm Schaffer (Pittsburgh, PA/Greensburg Central Catholic) played at the No. 4 draw and fell in all three matches in the singles competition.

Colleen Miller (Louisville, OH/Louisville) and Morgan Kramer (Canonsburg, PA/Canon McMillan) teamed up at the No. 1 draw for doubles competition. They posted a 2-1 record to take fifth place. Miller and Kramer defeated Ryan Derham and Hanora Barron of Goucher in the consolation semifinals, before falling in the fifth-place match.

Julie Lester (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum) and Mackenzie Yoho (Ellwood City, PA/Lincoln) represented the Lions in the No. 2 doubles draw and took seventh place. The duo handed Akouvi Yigan-Kohoe and Jessica Hair of Frostburg State a 6-2, 6-2 loss in their final match.

Behrend returns to action on Tuesday at D'Youville. The match begins at 4 p.m.
