Women's Tennis Advance to AMCC Championship Match

HARMARVILLE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's tennis team are one step closer to capturing their 12th Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) title with a 5-0 win over Penn State Altoona in the semifinals on Saturday at the Alpha Fitness and Tennis Club.

The Lions, who entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed, defeated the Lions in just five games to advance to the championship match on Sunday against the winner of No. 2 Franciscan and No. 3 Mt. Aloysius.

Malinda Miller (Champion, PA/Connellsville) and Morgan Kramer (Canonsburg, PA/Canon McMillan) were the first winners at No. 3 doubles, posting an 8-0 victory.

Chelsea Czerwinski (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) and Alexandra Laffey (Sewickley, PA/North Allegheny) defeated Michelle Colucci and Cassie Yatcilla 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, before Patra Sangpoompong (Bangkok, Thailand/Erie First Christian Academy) and Colleen Miller (Louisville, OH/Louisville) earned an 8-5 win at the No. 2 spot for a 3-0 lead in the match.

Only needing two singles wins to take the match, Sangpoompong tallied a 6-0, 6-3 decision at No. 3 singles and Storm Schaffer (Pittsburgh, PA/Greensburg Central Catholic) earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Taryn Kramer for the sweep.

The Lions return to action on Sunday at 2:30 for the championship match.
