No. 21 Mary Washington Defeats Lions in NCAA First Round

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The No. 21 Mary Washington women's tennis team defeated Penn State Behrend 5-0 in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Division III Tournament on Thursday morning at the Hegmann Tennis Complex.

The Eagles (17-7) will move onto the second round of the tournament after sweeping the doubles competition by identical scores of 8-0 and then getting the two singles wins to halt the match with four games unfinished.

Malinda Miller (Champion, PA/Connellsville) and Storm Schaffer (Pittsburgh, PA/Greensburg Central Catholic) were able to complete their singles matches. Miller, competing at third singles, fell 6-0, 6-0, while Schaffer dropped the same decision at the fifth spot.

Freshman Alexandra Laffey (Sewickley, PA/North Allegheny) was the only Behrend player to take a set point from their opponent at No. 1 singles against Lindsay Raulston. Her match was cut short at 6-1, 2-0.
