Women's Tennis Downs La Roche in AMCC Opener

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's tennis team had four players win both singles and doubles competition to defeat La Roche 8-1 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Friday night.

The Lions (1-0, 1-0 AMCC) open the season with a conference opponent and only dropped one set to start the year off right. Alexandra Laffey (Sewickley, PA/North Allegheny), Chelsea Czerwinski (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst), Colleen Miller (Louisville, OH/Louisville) and Malinda Miller (Champion, PA/Connellsville) each won twice on the afternoon.

The No. 1 duo at doubles, Laffey and Czerwinski, picked up where they left off last year with an 8-2 win. Morgan Kramer (Canonsburg, PA/Canon McMillan) and M. Miller only dropped one game for an 8-1 decision, while C. Miller and Celeste Bentley (Erie, PA/Harbor Creek) completed the doubles sweep, winning 8-2.

Czerwinski did not allow a point at No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-0) and the Millers each got 6-1, 6-0 decisions at third and fourth singles.

Laffey, playing at the No. 1 singles spot, defeated Sarah Brumer 6-4, 6-1. Junior Storm Schaffer (Pittsburgh, PA/Greensburg Central Catholic) tallied the final singles win at No. 5 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

Behrend returns to action tomorrow against Mt. Aloysius. Match time is 4 p.m. at Westwood Racquet Club.
