Franciscan Edges Women's Tennis in Key AMCC Match

STUEBENVILLE, Ohio – The Franciscan women's tennis team handed Penn State Behrend its first loss of the season with a close 5-4 decision in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Saturday.

The Barons (4-1, 3-0 AMCC) won two doubles matches and three singles to sneak past the Lions (2-1, 2-1 AMCC).

Colleen Miller (Louisville, OH/Louisville) and Storm Schaffer (Pittsburgh, PA/Greensburg Central Catholilc) tallied the lone doubles win at the No. 3 spot, defeating Ashley Veazy and Emily Mathias, 8-4. Schaffer was also the only player to win both games, claiming a 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

Playing at No. 2 singles for the first time this season, Alexandra Laffey (Sewickley, PA/North Allegheny) handed Veazy a 6-1, 6-2 loss. Malinda Miller (Champion, PA/Connellsville) picked up the other singles win for Behrend at the fourth spot. She won in three sets against Allison Jensen (6-3, 1-6, 10-8).

The Lions will travel to Medaille on Wednesday for an AMCC match, beginning at 4 p.m.
