Women's Tennis Advances to AMCC Championship Match

ERIE, Pa. - The Penn State Behrend women's tennis team defeated Pitt-Greensburg 5-4 to advance to the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championships at Westwood Racquet Club.

Malinda Miller (Champion, PA/Connellsvile) was the decisive game at No. 4 singles. She defeated Sydney Geary in three sets 6-4, 3-6 and 7-5.

Before Miller's heroics, the Lions (9-3) won two of the three doubles matches and then got the second singles by Chelsea Czerwinski (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) and six singles victory from Julie Lester (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum). Czerwinski posted a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Corinne Kirk, before Lester handed Emily Frye a 6-2, 6-2 loss.

At No. 1 doubles,  Czerwinski and Alexandra Laffey (Sewickley, PA/North Allegheny) won 8-5 and Colleen Miller (Louisville, OH/Louisville) and teammate Celeste Bentley (Erie, PA/Harbor Creek) tallid the other doubles win at 8-3.

Behrend will face the top-seed Franciscan tomorrow for the AMCC title at 11:30 a.m. The Barons were a 5-0 winner over No. 4 Penn State Altoona in the first semifinals.
