Women's Tennis Downs Medaille in Home Opener

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's tennis team opened the season with a convincing 9-0 win over Medaille in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Friday afternoon.

The Lions (1-0, 1-0 AMCC) were victorious in all nine matches, including six single and three doubles competition. Chelsea Czerwinski (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) and Alexandra Laffey (Sewickley, PA/North Allegheny) were double winners on the day. Czerwinski won at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 score and then teamed with Laffey for an 8-3 decision. Laffey, at No. 2 singles, blanked her opponent, 6-0, 6-0.

Jacqueline Cannella (Bradford Woods, PA/North Allegheny), playing in her first collegiate match, picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles, while Colleen Miller (Louisville, OH/Louisville) tallied a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles.

Oskana Omelchenko (Erie, PA/Central Tech) posted a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles and Malinda Miller (Champion, PA/Connellsville) completed the singles sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 decision at the No. 6 spot.

At No. 2 doubles, Kat McDonough (Pittsburgh, PA/Oakland Catholic) and Celeste Bentley (Harborcreek, PA/Harbor Creek) earned an 8-0 win. Kelly Miller (Louisville, OH/Louisville) and Morgan Kramer (Canonsburg, PA/Canon McMillan) teamed for an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Behrend will travel to Fredonia State on Wednesday. Match begins at 2 p.m.
