Women's Tennis Drops Alfred

ERIE, Pa.  – The Penn State Behrend women's tennis team won all but one singles and one doubles match to defeat Alfred 7-2 in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.

The Lions (5-0) dropped the first doubles match but recovered with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Colleen Miller (Louisville, OH/Louisville) and Jacqueline Cannella (Bradford Woods, PA/North Allegheny) posted an 8-2 decision at No. 2.

Celeste Bentley (Harborcreek, PA/Harbor Creek) and Kelly Miller (Louisville, OH/Louisville) gave Behrend a small 2-1 lead with an 8-4 score over Emma Siemer and Iada Gillet.

In singles action, Chelsea Czerwinski (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) won in two sets at No. 1. She tallied a 7-6 win in the first set thanks to a 7-4 tiebreaker followed by a 6-1 victory against Rachel Cook. Alexandra Laffey (Sewickley, PA/North Allegheny) followed with her first win of the day (6-4, 6-4) and No. 2 vs. Emma Jackson.

Cannella ended the day with two wins, including a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Siemer. C. Miller and Malinda Miller (Champion, PA/Connellsville) had no problems in the fifth and sixth singles, respectively. C. Miller finished with a 6-1, 6-0 score against Gillet and M. Miller gave up one match point against Rachel Pera to win 6-1, 6-0.

The Lions return to action on Friday against Franciscan. Match begins at 5 p.m.
