Women's Tennis Remains Undefeated

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's tennis team remains unbeaten while knocking Franciscan off the undefeated ranks with a 7-2 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) win on Friday afternoon.

In the opening doubles matches, Chelsea Czerwinski (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) and Alexandra Laffey (Sewickley, PA/North Allegheny) darted out to a 7-0 lead before surrendering two straight sets. The duo won the final game to for an 8-2 victory at No. 1 for the Lions (6-0, 4-0 AMCC)

Jacqueline Cannella (Bradford Woods, PA/North Allegheny) and Colleen Miller (Louisville, OH/Louisville) were trailing 4-3 in No. 2 doubles and could not survive Renata Crespo and Maggie Vander Woude for a close 8-6 loss.

Celeste Bentley (Harborcreek, PA/Harbor Creek) and Kelly Miller (Louisville, OH/Louisville) gave the Lions a 2-1 lead after winning No. 3 doubles, 8-2.

In singles, Maria Binette took the first set at the No. 1 spot, winning the last five games to post a 7-5 victory after being down, 5-2. Czerwinski tied the match with a 6-4 decision and then finished with a 10-7 score in the super tiebreaker for the victory.

At No. 2, Laffey defeated Crespo 6-1, 6-1 while Cannella handed Julia Razook a 6-3, 6-2 loss at No. 3 singles.

C. Miller had a close first set against Vander Woude, earning a 7-6 decision and 6-4 second-set win at No. 5 singles. Malinda Miller (Champion, PA/Connellsville) battled back from being down a set, to defeat Anna O'Connor, 6-3, 6-4.

Behrend returns to action tomorrow when they host La Roche at Westwood Racquet Club at 3 p.m.
