Women's Tennis Blanks Medaille to Open Season

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State women's tennis team made a statement to open the 2016 season with a 9-0 win over Medaille in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Friday.

The Lions (1-0) won all three doubles and six singles matches to record their first conference win. The duo of Celeste Bentley (Harborcreek, PA/Harbor Creek) and Kelly Miller (Louisville, OH/Louisville) shut out their opponents at No. 2 doubles with an 8-0 score.

Chelsea Czerwinski (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) and Jacqueline Cannella (Bradford Woods, PA/North Allegheny) were 8-3 winners at No. 1 doubles, while Erica Cannella (Bradford Woods, PA/North Allegheny) and Bayleigh Adams (Manchester, NJ/Manchester) posted the same 8-3 score to win at No. 3 doubles.

Czerwinski, Jacqueline Cannella, Bentley, Miller and Erica Cannella also won their singles matches. At No. 1 singles, Czerwinski topped Liz Barrett 6-4, 6-2, before J. Cannella earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles. Bentley, playing at the No. 3 spot, recorded a 6-3, 6-1 decision and Miller didn't give up a game point, winning 6-0, 6-0.

Oksana Omelchenko (Erie, PA/Central Tech) and E. Cannella each won their singles matches, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

Behrend returns to action on Wednesday against Fredonia. Match begins at 4 p.m.
