Franciscan Nips Women's Tennis in AMCC Action

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Franciscan women's tennis team handed Penn State Behrend their first loss of the season with a close 5-4 decision in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Friday afternoon.

The Lions (6-1, 5-1 AMCC) won three singles matches and one doubles, falling in a tiebreaker set at No. 2 doubles to fall to the Barons (6-2, 5-0 AMCC).  

Chelsea Czerwinski (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) and Jacqueline Cannella (Bradford Woods, PA/North Allegheny) were victorious at No. 1 doubles behind an 8-5 score against Maria Binette and Claire Haddad.

Celeste Bentley (Harborcreek, PA/Harbor Creek) and Kelly Miller (Louisville, OH/Louisville) fell just short at No. 2 doubles, dropping 8-7 (7-5).

Czerwinski also won her No. 1 singles match (6-2, 6-4) along with Bentley at No. 3 singles (6-1, 6-1). At No. 5 singles, Miller posted a 6-3, 6-4 win to help Behrend split the singles competition.

Behrend returns to action on Saturday at Geneva. Match begins at 11 a.m.
