Cannella Helps Lions Defeat Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Sophomore Jacqueline Cannella (Bradford Woods, PA/North Allegheny) earned a 6-4, 7-6 victory at No. 2 singles to be the deciding match and helping the Penn State Behrend women's tennis team to a 5-4 win over Geneva on Saturday.

Head coach Jeff Barger, who captured his 200th AMCC victory against Pitt-Bradford, is now four wins away from reaching his 400th career win for both the men's and women's programs combined.

The Lions (7-1) had their second straight close match, this time coming out victorious for the non-conference win. Behrend held a 2-1 lead after the doubles competition to start. Chelsea Czerwinski (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) and Cannella tallied a 9-7 decision at No. 1 doubles.

Celeste Bentley (Harborcreek, PA/Harbor Creek) and Kelly Miller (Louisville, OH/Louisville) picked up the second doubles win with an 8-4 score at No. 2 doubles.

Czerwinski and Miller also won their singles matches in addition to Cannella to edge Geneva. Czerwinski was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at No. 1, while Miller recorded a 6-3, 6-3 win at five singles. The match came down to No. 2 singles and thanks to Cannella, the Lions registered their seventh win of the season.
