Barger Reaches Milestone in Sweep of Alfred

ALFRED, NY – The Penn State Behrend men's and women's tennis teams each defeated Alfred to give head coach Jeff Barger his 400th career win for both programs combined on Friday night.

The women (10-1) tallied a 7-2 victory for their fourth straight win and 10th overall on the season, while the men recorded an 8-1 decision to help Barger reach the milestone. He is the second head coach this season to reach 400 career wins. Men's soccer coach Dan Perritano earned his 400th win in a 3-0 decision over Allegheny on Sept. 17.

On the women's side, the Lions surrendered a doubles and a singles match to easily defeat the Saxons. Chelsea Czerwinski (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) was a double winner for Behrend at the No. 1 spots, picking up a 6-3, 6-3 singles victory and an 8-1 score with Jacqueline Cannella (Bradford Woods, PA/North Allegheny). Cannella went on to earn a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles.

Celeste Bentley (Harborcreek, PA/Harbor Creek) and Oksana Omelchenko (Erie, PA/Central Tech) teamed up for an 8-3 decision at No. 2 doubles. They both also earned singles wins. Bentley won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 and Omelchenko won in a tiebreaker (5-7, 7-6, 10-6) at No. 5.

Kat McDonough (Oakmont, PA/Oakland Catholic) was the singles winner at the No. 4 spot, 6-3, 6-3, to complete the match.

For the men, Behrend swept the doubles competition and won five of the six singles matches for the non-conference win. Scott Russell, Brent McFarland and Brenden Dollard won both their singles and doubles matches on the night.

The Lions return to action on Saturday, October 15 for the AMCC semifinals in Wexford, Pa.
