Lions Advance to AMCC Championshp Match; Women's Tennis Defeats La Roche

MONROEVILLE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's tennis team won two doubles and three singles matches to defeat La Roche 5-1 in the semifinals of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championships on Saturday night at The Club/Sport and Health in Monroeville, Pa.

Chelsea Czerwinski (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) and Jacqueline Cannella (Bradford Woods, PA/North Allegheny) were 8-3 winners at No. 1 doubles, while Celeste Bentley (Harborcreek, PA/Harbor Creek) and Kelly Miller (Louisville, OH/Louisville) shut out Emily Huwe and Sarah Brunner at the No. 2 spot.

Czerwinski , Bently and Miller finished their singles matches to halt the match once Behrend was declared the winners. Czerwinski posted a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 1 singles over Brunner. At No. 3 singles, Bentley tallied a 6-1, 6-2 victory and then Miller recorded a 6-2, 6-0 against Miranda Lasher at No. 5 singles.

Cannella and Oksana Omelchenko (Erie, PA/Central Tech) were both leading in their singles matches before being stopped.

The Lions will face top-seeded Franciscan tomorrow for the AMCC title at 11:30 a.m. The Barons were a 5-2 winner over No. 4 Penn State Altoona in the first semifinals.
