Lions Place Fourth at ECAC Championships; Pell Named Most Outstanding Performer
Rachel Pell struck gold twice, winning the 100m hurdles and the 400m hurdles to help the Penn State Behrend women’s track & field team place fourth out of 28 teams at the 2018 ECAC Outdoor Championships held at Johns Hopkins on Thursday.
BALTIMORE, Md. – Rachel Pell (Elizabeth, PA/Elizabeth Forward) struck gold twice, winning the 100m hurdles and the 400m hurdles to help the Penn State Behrend women's track & field team place fourth out of 28 teams at the 2018 ECAC Outdoor Championships held at Johns Hopkins on Thursday.
Johns Hopkins took home the women's trophy with a score of 135.50 and Waynesburg grabbed second with 79 points, followed by Misericordia with 74.5 and Behrend in fourth with 70.50.
Pell earned Most Outstanding Performer for bring the lone double champion for the Lions and third overall after Haley Yenchik won the pole vault on day one. Pell ran 15.81 in the 100m hurdles to claim her first championship and then posted a time of 1:02.61 in the 400m hurdles for her second medal. She won the finals with three seconds to spare.
Haley Yenchik (Cecil, PA/Canon McMillan) broke another school record, in addition to winning the pole vault yesterday. She recorded a mark of 5.36m (17-7) in the long jump to set the new mark and place seventh overall. Yenchik set the record on her fifth attempt.
Yenchik, Gabrielle Loeffler (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin), Tiayerra Stroncek (Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Hills) and Pell made up the fourth place 4x100m relay team for All-ECAC honors with a time of 50.45
Savanna Carr (Franklin, PA/Franklin Area) was fifth in the 1500m race to pace the Lions. She clocked in with at time of 5:13.39 for All-ECAC accolades.
In the discus, Myeisha Sanders (Erie, PA/East) claimed fourth place with a throw of 36.05m on her fifth attempt.
Behrend will now wait to see which athletes qualified for the 2018 NCAA Division III Championships.
