Volleyball Opens Season at Battlefield Classic; Lions Fall Twice

GETTYSBURG, Pa.  – Competing in their first matches of the season, the Penn State Behrend women's volleyball team fell twice at the Battlefield Classic hosted by Gettysburg College this weekend.

The Lions (0-2) opened with a 3-1 loss to Gettysburg, before dropping a 3-0 decision to Geneva. Behrend went up 1-0 in the first match against the Bullets (1-1) with a score of 25-21. Gettysburg barely won the next two games 25-22, 26-24 and collecting the win with a 25-15 game-four victory.

Mary Sperry (Atlantic, PA/Conneaut Lake) recorded 19 kills and 19 digs on the afternoon, knocking down a double-double against the Bullets with 10 kills and the same number of digs. Junior Chelsea Magnusen (Plum, PA/Plum) set her way to 32 assists and Tori Storino (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) led the defense with 13 digs.

The following match against Geneva, the Golden Tornadoes only won the first two games by a combined eight points with scores of 25-22 and 25-20. The Lions fell 25-12 in the third game. Storino continued to shine with 12 digs and two aces. Courtney Hopson (Erie, PA/McDowell) added double-digit digs with 10 and Catherine Healy (Connellsville, PA/Connellsville) tallied four kills and two blocks.

Behrend returns to action tomorrow against Cedar Crest and Rutgers-Camden on day two of the Battlefield Classic. Matches begin at 10 a.m.
