Women's Volleyball Goes 2-2 at Crusader Classic

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's volleyball team shut out New Jersey City and Immaculata, while falling to Susquehanna and Catholic at the two-day Crusader Classic hosted by Susquehanna University this weekend.

On Saturday, the Lions (12-7) opened up the tournament with a 3-0 win over NJCU by scores of 25-9, 25-11 and 25-15, before dropping a 3-1 decision to the hosts (21-25, 19-25, 26-24, 15-25). Chelsea Magnusen (Plum, PA/Plum) was selected to the All-Tournament Team for her outstanding play not only offensively, but defensively. In the first day of competition alone, Magnusen recorded 55 assists, 21 digs, 15 kills and five blocks.

Behrend then fell in a hard-fought battle to Catholic, 3-2. The Lions won the first and fourth set (25-19 and 25-21), but dropped the decisive set, 10-15. The Lions came out strong against Immaculata to earn their second win of the weekend, 25-14, 25-14 and 25-10.

Against NJCU, Magnusen nearly had a triple-double with 22 assists, 10 digs, seven kills and two blocks. Mary Sperry (Atlantic, PA/Conneaut Lake) added seven kills in the win. In the second match versus the Crusaders, Sperry led with 13 kills and 20 digs. Magnusen was on fire and continued to dominate with 33 assists, 11 digs, eight kills and three blocks.

In the five-set match against Catholic, Catherine Healy (Connellsville, PA/Connellsville) and Lindsay Bean (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBeouf) combined for 37 kills. Healy paced the team with 20 kills and four blocks. Bean added 17 kills and three blocks. Defensively, Sperry registered a team-best 36 digs, while Magnusen dished out 44 assists to go with 12 digs.

The final match of the day against Immaculata, Healy had 17 kills to lead the attack and Ashley Solo (Irwin, PA/Penn-Trafford) posted nine kills and two blocks. Courtney Hopson (Erie, PA/McDowell) tallied a season-best five aces and added seven digs.

The Lions return to action on Tuesday at home against Fredonia. Match begins at 7 p.m. and will be televised on the Image Sports Network.
