Lions Named AMCC Regular-Season Champions

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's volleyball team posted a 3-0 victory over Pitt-Greensburg on Saturday and finished undefeated in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) play for the first time since 2008.

The Lions (18-8, 9-0 AMCC) handed the Panthers (6-24, 4-5 AMCC) a three-set loss (25-6, 25-19 and 25-19) to keep their undefeated streak at home alive this season and be named the AMCC regular-season champions with a 9-0 record. Behrend already secured the No. 1 seed and hosting rights for the AMCC Tournament on Nov. 3-4.

Celebrating senior day, Mary Sperry (Atlantic, PA/Conneaut Lake) and Alyssa Pears (Meadville, PA/Meadville) combined for 21 kills and 12 digs in the winning effort. Sperry had a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs. Pears hit .333 with eight kills on 18 attacks and two errors.

As a team, Behrend only committed 10 attacking errors on the day including just one in the dominating first set. The Lions only went through the serving rotation once and allowed just six points by Pitt-Bradford for the early lead. Sperry led with four kills, however Catherine Healy (Connellsville, PA/Connellsville) and Lindsey Bean (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBeouf) each added three.

After taking a 20-13 in the second set behind a kill from Pears, Pitt-Bradford won five straight points to get within five points but Healy knocked in a kill off a pass from Chelsea Magnusen (Plum, PA/Plum) to seal the victory at 25-19.

The Panthers managed to take their first lead of the match in the third set. Pitt-Bradford kept the steady two-point lead until Ariana Rosario-Fuste (San Juan, Puerto Rico/University) served eight straight points, getting two kills by Sperry in the run for a 21-15 lead. The Lions won the match on a service error, 25-19.

Magnusen finished with 33 assists and three aces, while Tory Storino (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) had a team-best 15 digs and three aces.

The Lions return to action on Saturday in the AMCC Semifinals. Time and opponent to be announced.
