Behrend Wins Sixth Straight at UR Tournament

ROCHESTER, NY – The Penn State Behrend women's volleyball defeated Elmira 3-0 and Hamilton 3-2 at the University of Rochester Tournament on Friday night.
The Lions (6-0) have made it six in a row, marking the longest winning streak to start the season since 2006 when Behrend reeled of 15 consecutive victories. The Lions defeated Elmira in straight sets (25-14, 25-13, 25-15) and then held off Hamilton (25-19, 25-19, 23-25, 11-25, 15-12).
Behrend was able to showcase 13 players in the first match to down Elmira. Hannah Saunders hit .667 behind six kills on nine attempts, while handing out 17 assists and making four blocks. Courtney Hopson (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) led with 16 digs and Meredith Snyder (Parker, PA/Allegheny Clarion Valley) added seven blocks and five kills.
In the second win of the night, the Lions 19 kills and 19 digs from Alyssa Samarco (Plum, PA/Plum). Snyder had an all-around performance with 10 kills, seven digs and two blocks. Once again, Hopson led in the digs category with 25, while Saunders contributed 36 assists and 10 digs for the double-double.
Paige Scurpa (Sharpsville, PA/Sharpsville) tallied eight kills and two blocks vs. Hamilton.
Behrend returns to action tomorrow against Skidmore at 11 a.m. and St. John Fisher at 1 p.m.
