Women's Volleyball Competes at Susquehanna Invitational

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's volleyball team posted a 1-3 record over the weekend at the Susquehanna Invitational. The Lions (6-8) tallied a 3-0 win over York on Saturday morning, while falling to Washington College in five sets.

In the first match on Friday, Behrend fell to Misericordia 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 14-25, 25-22). Meredith Snyder (Parker, PA/Allegheny Clarion Valley) led with 10 kills and Amanda Henry (Bridgeville, PA/South Fayette) added seven kills. Courtney Hopson (Erie, PA/McDowell) posted a team-best 18 digs and setter Hannah Saunders (Elizabeth, PA/Elizabeth Forward) had 35 assists and 17 digs for the double-double.

The Lions started out strong against Washington, winning the first two sets 25-20 and 25-21. The Shorewomen fought back to win the next three sets 25-20, 25-15 and 15-11. Rachel Frye (Leechburg, PA/Kiski Area) led with 12 kills, 11 digs and two blocks. Maddie Auld added eight kills and 15 digs. Hopson led once again with 18 digs and Banta chipped in 11 digs.

On day two, Behrend handed York a 25-22, 25-22, and 25-16 loss. Lindsay Bean (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) tallied eight kills and Paige Scurpa (Sharpsville, PA/Sharpsville) registered eight digs and five kills. Saunders dished out 26 assists and Hopson made her third straight match with double-digit digs with 19. She also tallied four aces and three assists.

In the final match of the weekend, the Lions took one set from the hosts Susquehanna. Behrend fell 25-19, 25-14 before winning the third set 26-24. The Crusaders won the final set 25-16 for a 3-1 victory. Snyder recorded seven kills, six digs and three blocks for the Lions. Hopson had 15 digs and Banta was close behind with 11 digs. Saunders led with 18 assists and four digs.

Behrend returns to action on Saturday against Pitt-Greensburg and Mt. Aloysius in an AMCC quad match.
