Volleyball Tops Grove City

ERIE, Pa. – Paige Scurpa (Sharpsville, PA/Sharpsville) registered a career-high 26 digs and Rachel Frye (Leechburg, PA/Kiski Area) added 13 kills to lead Penn State Behrend women's volleyball team past Grove City 3-1 in non-conference action on Monday night.

The Lions (11-8) snapped a four-match losing streak to the Wolverines (8-12) in four sets, winning 26-24, 25-22, 22-25 and 25-9. Behrend managed to erase deficits in the first and second sets to take the early lead and then shut down Grove City in the fourth set for the team's fifth straight victory.

Natalija Galens recorded a double-double for Grove City with 11 digs and 10 kills.

Down six at 14-8 in the first set, the Lions used a 9-3 run to take their first lead at 18-17. The Wolverines tied it at 19-all and consequently four more times after that, before Maddie Auld (Peters Township, PA/Peters Township) got a kill across court and Lindsay Bean (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) followed with an attack in the middle of the net off an overpass for a close 26-24 win.

Behrend found themselves digging out of the second set after Grove City jumped out to a 17-10 lead. After the Lions took a timeout, they rallied back to knot the game at 20-all. Five of the next seven points belonged to Behrend thanks to a pair of kills by Frye, including the latter for the final point and a two-set lead. Scurpa led that set with 12 digs.

The two teams battled in a close third, similar to the first two. The Wolverines forced Behrend to nine attacking errors and Galens tallied six kills to win 25-22.

The Lions put Grove City away in the fourth set, holding the Wolverines to just four kills on 29 attempts. Behrend recorded 11 of the 25 points by kills including five from Frye and five from Kylie McSwaney (Greensburg, PA/Greensburg Salem).

Libero Courtney Hopson (Erie, PA/McDowell) posted 19 digs and three assists. McSwaney finished with 10 kills and four blocks. Hannah Saunders (Elizabeth, PA/Elizabeth Forward) tallied 29 assists, seven digs, three kills and two blocks.
