Women's Volleyball Downs Hilbert in Three

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's volleyball team remains undefeated in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) play with a 3-0 win over Hilbert on Wednesday night.

The Lions (13-11, 5-0 AMCC) posted their 12th straight win over the Hawks (0-18, 0-4 AMCC) in three sets, 25-8, 25-19 and 25-11. Kylie McSwaney (Greensburg, PA/Greensburg Salem) led with nine kills on 16 attempts and no errors for a .562 hitting percentage.

Courtney Hopson (Erie, PA/McDowell) had game-high 13 digs and Hannah Saunders (Elizabeth, PA/Elizabeth Forward) handed out 22 assists.

Behrend took control of the match early in the first set. Paige Scurpa (Sharpsville, PA/Sharpsville) served seven straight points while Rachel Frye (Leechburg, PA/Kiski Area) knocked down three kills for a 9-4 lead. The Lions only allowed four more points the rest of the set for a commanding 25-8 win.

Hilbert stayed within a few points of the Lions in set two. In the final points of the set, the serving of Lexi Irwin (Irwin, PA/Hempfield) helped Behrend to a 4-0 run for a 24-19 edge before McSwaney registered the final point on a kill for a 2-0 lead in the match.

Similar to the first set, the Lions jumped out to a 22-10 lead and eventually claimed the third set on an ace by Ashley Solo (Irwin, PA/Penn-Trafford).

Irwin finished with 10 assists, while four Behrend players recorded five kills each.

The Lions return to action on Tuesday at Medaille. Match begins at 7 p.m.
