Women's Volleyball Sweeps D'Youville
The Penn State Behrend women’s volleyball team picked up their sixth Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) win with a 3-0 victory over D’Youville on Wednesday night at the College Center Gym.
BUFFALO, NY – The Penn State Behrend women's volleyball team picked up their sixth Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) win with a 3-0 victory over D'Youville on Wednesday night at the College Center Gym.
The Lions (14-13, 6-2 AMCC) swept the Spartans (4-20, 1-7 AMCC) 25-23, 25-18 and 25-20 to secure a spot in the conference playoffs. Lindsay Bean (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) hit .346 thanks to a team-best 10 attacks with one error on 26 attempts.
Kylie McSwaney (Greensburg, PA/Greensburg Salem) had the best hitting night with a .400 percentage behind seven kills on 15 attempts. Libero Courtney Hopson (Erie, PA/McDowell) led with 15 digs and added four assists.
Behrend had the best set in the first with 16 kills on 40 attempts and just three errors to come away with a two-point win. Trailing for the majority of the set, the Lions got back into it behind the serving of Ashley Solo (Irwin, PA/Penn Trafford) and a pair of kills by Bean to make it 23-22 in Behrend's favor. A kill from Paige Scurpa (Sharpsville, PA/Sharpsville) and one from Jordan Harakal (Peters Township, PA/Peters Township) completed the 6-1 run for 25-23 decision and a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Lions started the second a bit different and never trailed, holding as much as a nine-point lead and finish the set on an ace by Solo for a 25-18 win.
With the score tied at 16-all in the third set, McSwaney and Bean combined for five kills with Solo serving once again for a 22-16 lead. Down to the final two points, Behrend took advantage of an attack error while Harakal and Rachel Frye (Leechburg, PA/Kiski Area) blocked Kaylee Stewart for match point.
Lexi Irwin (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield) had a season-high 20 assists and Hannah Saunders (Elizabeth, PA/Elizabeth Forward) added 11 assists, three digs, three kills and one ace.
The Lions return to action on Saturday against Franciscan in the final regular-season home match, beginning at 1 p.m.
