Women's Volleyball Takes Down Thiel in Four Sets

ERIE, Pa. – Amanda Henry (Bridgeville, PA/South Fayette) tallied her second double-double of the season with a game-high 15 kills and 14 digs to lead the Penn State Behrend women's volleyball team past Thiel 3-1 (24-26, 25-19, 25-19, 25-18) in non-conference action on Thursday night.

The Lions (8-6) bounced back from the early one-set deficit to defeat the Tomcats (6-9) for a second time this season by a score of 3-1. Rachel Frye (Leechburg, PA/Kiski Area) tallied 11 kills, while Meredith Snyder (Parker, PA/Allegheny-Clarion Valley) posted a team-high 18 digs.

Thiel scored 19 of its 26 points on kills in the first set to take the lead in the match to start. Behrend responded winning three straight sets for the victory. In the second set with a tied score at 7-all, the Lions went on a 13-5 run to take the lead for good and pull ahead 20-12. Three of the five final points for Behrend were recorded by kills from Frye, Alexandra Parra (Pittsburgh, PA/Bishop Canevin) and Henry for a 25-19 win.

Henry had six kills on 10 attempts with one error to help the Lions capture the third set, 25-19. Down 15-13, Saunders served three straight points where she assisted Frye and then Henry on three straight attacks that turned to kills and an 18-15 lead. Behrend remained out front and won the set on a pair of service aces from Frye and two attack errors.

The Lions never trailed in the fourth set, jumping out to a quick 7-1 lead to force a Thiel timeout. Behrend fended off the Tomcat comeback, keeping at least a three-point lead in the set. Henry had a set-high four kills, and Parra added three kills and two blocks to give Behrend a 25-18 win.

Saunders finished with 40 assists and Parra had a game-high six blocks.

The Lions return to action Wednesday at Pitt-Bradford to open AMCC play. Match begins at 7 p.m.
