Women's Volleyball Defeats Fredonia in Four
Paige Scurpa and Amanda Henry each recorded a double-double to lead Penn State Behrend past Fredonia State 3-1 in non-conference action on Tuesday night.
ERIE, Pa. – Paige Scurpa (Sharpsville, PA/Sharpsville) and Amanda Henry (Bridgeville, PA/South Fayette) each recorded a double-double to lead Penn State Behrend past Fredonia State 3-1 in non-conference action on Tuesday night.
The Lions (12-13) registered a 25-23, 22-25, 25-18, and 25-19 victory for their second straight win and first over the Blue Devils since 2012. Henry led with 14 kills and 12 digs, while Scurpa posted 18 digs and 11 kills.
After falling 9-6 in the first set, Behrend turned it around with a 13-7 run for a 19-16 advantage. The Lions had their largest lead on the next two points thanks to an ace by Rachel Frye (Leechburg, PA/Kiski) and an error by the Blue Devils (16-9). Fredonia got within one on two occasions but Behrend secured set one on an attack error, 25-23. Henry knocked down five of the nine kills in the set.
The second set had six ties, including 22-all on a kill from Kylie McSwaney (Greensburg, PA/Greensburg Salem). The Blue Devils took advantage of three straight errors by the Lions to even the match with a 25-22 decision.
In the third set, Behrend hit .344 and got four kills apiece from McSwaney and Scurpa to take a 2-1 lead in the match. With it tied at 10-all, the Lions went on a 10-5 spurt to force a Fredonia timeout. After the break, Hannah Saunders (Elizabeth, PA/Elizabeth Forward) tallied two kills while Scurpa and McSwaney each recorded one to win, 25-18.
The Blue Devils had a slight lead for the majority of the fourth set in hopes of forcing a fifth set. Three straight kills put Behrend in front for the first time in the set at 18-16. The Lions stayed on top and finished on kills from Frye and Scurpa at 25-19.
Saunders finished with 40 assists, eight digs, seven kills and four aces.
Behrend returns to action on Saturday at Franciscan. Match begins at 1 p.m.
