Franciscan Holds Off Women's Volleyball

STUEBENVILLE, Ohio – The Franciscan women's volleyball team tallied a three-set win (25-20, 25-20, 25-16) over Penn State Behrend in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Saturday afternoon.

The Barons (6-19, 4-3 AMCC) moved into a tie for third place in the conference with D'Youville while the Lions (12-14, 2-5 AMCC) dropped down to eighth place. Paige Scurpa (Sharpsville, PA/Sharpsville) led Behrend with a game-high 18 kills and seven kills. Rachel Frye (Leechburg, PA/Kiski) added 11 kills.

With the first set tied at 16-all, Franciscan went on a 9-5 run to win 25-20. The Barons, who never trailed in the set, got three kills from Maria Ciola including the last two points for a 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set was close in the beginning with four ties but the Barons broke open the set at 23-16 and eventually won on a service error to make it 2-0.

The Lions fought back in the third set, holding a 14-13 lead on a pair of blocks and a pair of aces by Amanda Henry (Bridgeville, PA/South Fayette). From there, Franciscan went on a 12-2 run to close out the match, 25-16.

Hannah Saunders (Elizabeth, PA/Elizabeth Forward) tallied 28 assists, four digs, three blocks and two kills.

Behrend returns to action on Wednesday against Medaille. Match begins at 7 p.m.
