Women's Volleyball Drops Season Opener to Oswego St.

MORRISVILLE, NY - The Penn State Behrend women's volleyball fell to Oswego St. 3-1 in the season opener at the Morrisville State Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions (0-1) took the first set 25-12, before falling 25-21, 25-22 and 25-13 to Lakers.

Rachel Frye (Leechburg, PA/Kiski) led with 12 kills, while Amanda Henry (Bridgeville, PA/South Fayette) added 11 digs and nine kills.

Madison Clapper (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) led the defense with 16 digs.

In the first set, Behrend held a 15-10 lead and then went on a 10-2 run to go ahead early in the match. Clapper served four straight points and Irwin served the final three points while getting the last kill for a 25-12 win.

Oswego St. made it 1-all in the second set with a 25-21 decision. The Lions managed cut the lead to three down the stretch at 24-21 but fell on a service error. The third set was even closer, coming down to last points. Tied at 21-all, the Lakers went ahead 24-22 and then grabbed the last point on an error for a 2-1 lead in the match.

Serving and defense helped Oswego capture the fourth set capture it season opener over Behrend.

Hannah Saunders (Elizabeth, PA/Elizabeth Forward) and Lexi Irwin (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield) both tallied 16 assists each. Keely Hering (North East, PA/North East) added 14 digs and six kills in her first collegiate match.

The Lions return to action on tomorrow against MIT and Norwich at the Morrisville St. Tournament. Matches begin at 1 p.m.
