Women's Water Polo Competes at Division III Championships

ST. PAUL, Minn.  – The Penn State Behrend women's water polo team finished ninth the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championships held at Macalester College this weekend.

The Lions started the championships with a 9-3 loss to Macalaster, a squad they defeated 6-5 earlier in the season. MaryEllen Spooner, Paula Rusca and Anne Lawrence each tallied a goal in the opener. Kendall Duffy and Lawrence made five steals apiece, while Spooner caused three drawn ejections.

Behrend then faced fifth-seeded Chatham in game two. Spooner scored two goals, dished out four assists and made four steals in an 11-9 loss. Duffy, Lawrence and Rachael Ragen added two goals each and Jillian Sebrosky tallied a goal. Elizabeth Causgrove was solid in between the pipes with 13 saves. Lawrence joined Spooner with four assists.

In the final game and battle for eighth place, the Lions fell 9-5 to Utica. It was the most goals Behrend had scored on the Pioneers this season. The two teams were meeting for the third time and Utica completed the sweep by a four-goal advantage.

Causgrove posted six saves and three steals in goal. Ragen led with two goals and three steals, while Duffy contributed one goal, three steals and four drawn kickouts.
