CWPA Region Two Tournament Day One Results

UTICA, NY - The Penn State Behrend women's water polo team fell in three games on Saturday afternoon at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Region Two Tournament.

The Lions (0-16) lost their first game to Connecticut College, 15-6.  In their second game of the day, Behrend was upended by Grove City, 18-3.  In the final game, Washington and Jefferson was too much for the Lions, winning 14-5.

In game one, the Lions fell behind 8-0 after the opening quarter and were unable to catch the Camels.  After the first quarter, Connecticut College only outscored Behrend 7-6, but the huge 8-0 deficit proved to be too much to overcome.

MaryEllen Spooner (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) led the Lions with five goals. Paula Rusca (Chicago, IL/Whitney Young) contributed one goal.

After the opener, Behrend was back in the water to take on Grove City.  The Wolverines used a strong defensive effort to hold the Lions to just three goals.

Spooner and Rusca both added to their daily totals with a goal each.  Emily Spicher (Falls Creek, PA/DuBois) chipped in one as well.

In the nightcap, Lions squared off against Washington and Jefferson.  After a tight first half with the Presidents leading 6-2, Washington and Jefferson found the back of the net five times in the third to earn the victory.

Spicher added two more goals in the final game of the day with Anne Lawrence (State College, PA/State College) netting two.  Spooner added to her team-leading total with one goal.

The Lions will be back in the water tomorrow for two more games.  Behrend will take on Chatham at 12 p.m. and Utica at 3 p.m.
