Chatham, Utica Too Much For Lions

UTICA, NY - The Penn State Behrend women's water polo team fell twice on Sunday afternoon at the Collegiate Water Polo Association Region Two Tournament. The Lions were defeated by Chatham 14-4, before being upended by Utica, 11-5.

In game one, a slow first half was too much for Behrend to overcome.  The Lions started slow, with Chatham getting out to a 6-0 lead at the break.  Behrend came back with four goals in the second half but it was not enough to catch the Cougars.

Anne Lawrence (State College, PA/State College) led the way with a hat trick.  Paula Rusca (Chicago, IL/Whitney Young) contributed one goal.

In their second game of the day, the Lions squared off against Utica for the third time this season.  The Pioneers used a big third quarter to earn the victory.

After falling behind 4-1 after the opening quarter, Behrend battled back with two unanswered goals in the second quarter to cut the lead to 4-3 at the break. However, Utica came out strong in the second half, outscoring the Lions by four in the third quarter.  Behrend put up another two spot in the fourth, but it was too little too late.

Lawrence and Rusca each added another goal.  MaryEllen Spooner (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) found the back of the net twice with Emily Spicher (Falls Creek, PA/DuBois) chipping in one.

The Lions will be back in the water on Friday for the Division III Championships at Grove City.
