Macalester, Carthage Too Much For Women’s Water Polo

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's water polo team fell twice on the second day of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Weekend.  In their first match on Saturday afternoon, the Lions were defeated by Macalester 14-4 and then lost to Carthage 15-2 in the nightcap.

The Behrend offense started slow in the opening game, falling behind 4-0 after the first quarter.  The Lions got on the board in the second, but still trailed 8-1 at halftime.  With the second half underway, Behrend was still unable to muster up enough offense to catch the Scots despite holding Macalester to just two goals in the third quarter.

MaryEllen Spooner (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) led the offense as she scored all four goals.  Elizabeth Causgrove (Erie, PA/McDowell), Paula Rusca (Chicago, IL/Whitney Young), Alex Isaacson (Williamsport, PA/Williamsport), and Mary Therese Causgrove (Erie, PA/McDowell) each tallied one assist.  Elizabeth Causgrove made nine saves as well and recorded a team-high four steals.

The Lions wrapped up the second day of the weekend with a game against Carthage.  The Lady Reds jumped out to a 9-0 halftime lead and never looked back.  Behrend was able to net a pair of goals in the third, but the Carthage offense still managed six second-half goals to seal the victory.

Spooner netted another goal for the Lions along with Hannah Kelly (Elizabeth, PA/South Allegheny).  Sarah Jelinek (Warren, PA/Warren) registered one assist for the offense.  Elizabeth Causgrove made nine more saves between the pipes and again led the defense with five steals.

Behrend will be back in action tomorrow to host Washington and Jefferson at 11:40 a.m. in the Junker Center.
