Lions Fall Twice at CWPA Regionals

MONMOUTH, Il. - On the opening day of Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) regional competition, the Penn State Behrend women's water polo team fell twice. In game one of the day, Carthage (4-3-1) knocked off the Lions (1-8) by a score of 8-1 and in game two Connecticut College (3-10) downed Behrend, 16-2.

In game one, Behrend's defense played well holding Carthage to eight goals, however the Lions could push in just one score themselves. Taylor Reed (York, PA/Central York) netted the lone goal for Behrend just after halftime.

In the second leg of the doubleheader, Connecticut College took the early lead jumping out to a 6-0 advantage after the first quarter. Alex Isaacson (Williamsport, PA/Williamsport) responded with the first goal of the second quarter at the 7:16 mark. Trailing 10-1 with 3:21 to play in the third quarter, Breanne Martinez (La Mirada, CA/St. Joseph) tacked on a score to cut the lead to eight. Connecticut College would hold on for the victory adding six scores in the final frame.

Entering the day as the reigning CWPA Defensive Player of the Week selection, Kara Stegmann (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) helped keep the Lions in both games with 24 saves.

Behrend will dive back in the pool tomorrow with two more games on the schedule. The Lions take on the host Monmouth at 9 a.m. and then battle Macalester at 6:20 p.m.
