Lions Drop a Pair at Claremont Convergence

CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Penn State Behrend women's water polo team dropped a pair of matches Saturday in their first day at the Claremont Convergence Tournament, hosted by Pomona-Pitzer College.

The Lions (0-4) lost a 12-3 decision against Whittier (10-3) in their first game Saturday morning. Behrend got off to a rocky start, falling behind 4-0 after the first period of play. In the second quarter, last year's CWPA Rookie of the Year,  Maryn Horn (Houston, TX/Jersey Village), put the Lions on the board for the first goal of the season for the squad.

Horn added two more goals, one in the third and one in the fourth quarter, to get the Behrend offense going for the first time this season. Brittany Pinter (Erie, PA/McDowell) tallied two assists on Horn's goals while in net, Kara Stegman (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) made six saves.

Later in the afternoon, the Lions squared off against Occidental (2-5) and fell 11-4. Horn continued to find the back of the net, tallying two more goals. Taylor Reed (York, PA/Central York) got herself on the scoresheet for the first time this season, also scoring two goals.

The second game was a tight battle early. Behrend and the Tigers traded goals through the first half of play. Horn notched the first goal in the second half to tie the game at 4-all. From there Occidental scored seven straight goals to take home the victory. Stegman made a season-high 11 saves in net.

The Lions return to action on their California road trip Monday when they play La Verne. Game time is 7 p.m. EST (4 p.m. PST).
