Women's Water Polo Gets First Win

KENOSHA, Wi. – The Penn State Behrend women's water polo team got their first win of the season against Macalester 7-3 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Regional Tournament Saturday. They also fell to Connecticut College 12-5.

In their second game of the day and fourth of the tournament, the Lions (1-9) put themselves in the win column, holding the Scots (2-6) to just three goals.

Lauren Wood (Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills) scored more goals (4) than the entire Macalester team (3). After a slow start to the game, Wood scored back-to-back goals at the 4:46 and 3:17 mark of the first quarter to put Behrend on top 2-0.

Two goals by the Scots and one each by Mary Therese Causgrove (Erie, PA/McDowell) and Taylor Reed (York, PA/Central York) gave the Lions a 4-2 advantage going into half time.

Wood added two more tallies and Reed notched another in the third to double their lead at 7-3 after three quarters. Neither team was able to score in the fourth, handing Behrend the victory.

In game one, the Camels (1-0) got their season started with a win. Connecticut and Behrend were in a tight battle through the first half. Goals by Maryn Horn (Houston, TX/Jersey Village), Brittany Pinter (Erie, PA/McDowell) and Wood forced a 5-3 match.

The third quarter is where the Camels started to pull away. They scored three goals to the Lions' one to push their lead to four.

The in the fourth, four more goals by Connecticut sealed the victory. Wood and Pinter each added a goal in the second half in the fight for a comeback.

Kara Stegman (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) made 10 saves in each game, following eight saves in each contest yesterday.

The final game for Behrend in the regional tournament is tomorrow against Utica with a 10:15 a.m. start.
