Lions Edged Twice in CWPA Tournament

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's water polo team was edge by Connecticut College 10-8 and by Carthage 9-6 Sunday in the final day of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) regional tournament they hosted.

In game one on the day, the Lions (4-13) made a late comeback against the Camels (11-5), but just fell short of making it the full distance.

Connecticut took a 4-2 lead after the first quarter and put in Behrend in a slight hole. Mary Therese Causgrove (Erie, PA/McDowell) scored both goals for the Lions.

The second and third quarters were big for the Camels. They were able to find the back of the net five times and double their lead.

The Lions would not go away quietly however. Maryn Horn (Houston, TX/Jersey Village) score to close out the third. Clare Jefferys (Erie, PA/Villa Maria Academy) scored a quick goal to start the third and after a Behrend timeout, Horn netted back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to one at 9-8.

Through constant pressure from the Lion offense, the Connecticut defense stood tall and did not allow another goal. They then added an insurance goal with 1:56 remaining to seal the win.

Game two against the Lady Reds (13-3) was just as exciting. Brittany Pinter (Erie, PA/McDowell) put Behrend on the board first, 44 seconds into the game. Cathage bounced right back and score three unanswered goals to close out the first quarter.

In the second, the Lions and the Reds traded goals. Jefferys scored followed by a Carthage answer. Then Causgrove scored and once again, the Reds answered. Jefferys tallied another followed by one more Carthage answer.

Kaitlyn Conely (Exeter, CA/Exeter) notched her first goal in the game and Lauren Wood (Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills) got her first to tie the game at 6-all with 5:11 left in the contest. The Lady Reds then scored three goals and captured the win in the final game of the weekend.

Behrend is back in the pool at home on Thursday against Gannon with an 8 p.m. start.
